Because Mini-DV is a digital format, the data is either there or it is not, so we cannot reconstruct missing frames. However, our real-time monitoring flags every dropout, and we can often recover better results than a consumer camcorder by using professional heads and careful tracking adjustment.

Yes. Mini-DV tapes store timecode and date metadata in the data stream alongside the video. Our FireWire transfer pulls this data intact. The date stamp will not be burned into the picture unless your camera originally recorded it that way, but the metadata is preserved in the file.

Yes. We offer both formats. MP4 is compressed for easy playback on any device, while DV-AVI preserves the native DV codec at full quality, which is ideal if you plan to edit the footage. Just let us know when you place your order.

LP mode fits more footage onto the tape but at lower quality and with a higher risk of dropouts. We transfer LP tapes without issue, though the picture may show more glitches than SP recordings. The slower tape speed makes the signal more fragile, so transferring sooner rather than later is a good idea.

The recording is digital, but the medium is still magnetic tape. The oxide coating deteriorates over time, causing data dropout. Digital errors appear as blocky glitches rather than the gradual fading you see with analogue formats, but the data loss is just as permanent. The tape does not care whether the signal it carries is ones and zeros or an analogue waveform.
