Convert Mini DV Tapes to Digital

Mini-DV arrived in 1995 and changed home video overnight. For the first time, consumers could record digitally. The picture was sharper, the colour more accurate, and copies could be made without the generational loss that plagued analogue tape. The format was adopted by everyone from parents filming school concerts to independent filmmakers shooting features on a budget. If you owned a camcorder between roughly 1996 and 2010, it almost certainly used Mini-DV.

Because the recording is already digital, you might assume these tapes are safe. They are not. The tape itself is extremely thin, just 6.35mm wide, and the recording relies on a spinning drum head reading microscopic magnetic tracks. Dropouts (brief data errors that appear as blocky glitches) become more frequent as the tape ages and the oxide coating deteriorates. Humid storage accelerates this. The longer you leave them, the more frames you lose permanently.

Our transfer is digital-to-digital via FireWire (IEEE 1394), which pulls the native DV data stream directly from the tape without any analogue conversion step. This means the file you receive is bit-for-bit identical to what the camera originally recorded. We monitor the transfer in real time and flag any tapes with excessive dropout so you know exactly what condition your recordings are in.

The DV codec records at 25 Mbps, which holds up remarkably well even by modern standards. Your files will look crisp on a phone, tablet, or television. We deliver as standard MP4 for easy playback, and can also supply the raw DV-AVI files if you want to edit the footage yourself.
