Yes. You do not need the original camera to save old camcorder footage — but you do need the right playback equipment for the tape format.

If you had a camcorder in the 1990s, there is a good chance your tapes are Hi8. Here is what the format is, how to identify it, and what to do with your tapes now.
Read articleVideo8 has lower resolution than Hi8, around 240 to 280 lines, so it will look softer. But a properly transferred Video8 tape, played on professional equipment with time base correction and colour adjustment, can look surprisingly decent. The footage will never be sharp by modern standards, but it will be stable, watchable, and far better than playing it back on a worn camcorder.
Consumer camcorders have worn heads, ageing motors, and no time base correction. Playing old tapes on them risks further damage to both the tape and the machine. Professional decks handle aged tapes far more gently and produce a cleaner, more stable signal. If the tapes matter to you, professional transfer is worth it.
In most cases, yes. Video8 tapes from that era are ageing, but professional playback equipment is far more forgiving than a domestic camcorder. We have successfully transferred tapes over 35 years old. The sooner they are transferred, the better the result.
No. Video8 is the standard analogue 8mm format with roughly 240 lines of resolution. Hi8 is the upgraded version with around 400 lines and improved colour. The cassettes are physically identical, so check the label on the tape to tell them apart.
Probably not. Rolling and flickering are usually caused by tracking issues or worn playback heads, both of which our professional decks compensate for using time base correction. The tape itself may be perfectly fine; it just needs better equipment to read it properly.
