Digital8 was Sony's clever bridge between the analogue 8mm world and the digital future. Launched in 1999, it recorded the same DV codec as Mini-DV but onto standard Hi8-sized cassettes. This meant you could drop a Digital8 tape into an older Hi8 camcorder and it would physically fit, even though the recording format was entirely different. Sony's D8 camcorders could even play back your old analogue Hi8 and Video8 tapes, which made upgrading painless.

Check the cassette label and your camera model. Digital8 tapes are usually marked 'Digital8' or 'D8', and they were only recorded on specific Sony camcorders (model numbers starting with DCR). If you are unsure, send the tapes to us and we will identify the format before starting any transfer.
Yes. Digital8 uses the DV codec at 25 Mbps, which produces a noticeably sharper and more stable image than analogue Hi8. The colour is more accurate, there are no tracking issues, and copies can be made without generational loss. It is essentially Mini-DV quality on a Hi8-sized cassette.
Yes. Send everything in one order. We identify each format and use the appropriate transfer method: FireWire for Digital8, analogue capture for Hi8 and Video8. You do not need to sort them yourself.
Noticeably, yes. Digital8 uses the DV codec at 25 Mbps, which is sharper and more stable than any analogue consumer format. The colour accuracy is also better, and because the signal is digital, there are no tracking wobbles or colour bleed.
No. Digital8 cameras could play analogue tapes as a convenience feature, but the recording formats are completely different. Digital8 is a digital codec written to tape; Hi8 is an analogue recording. The tapes need different transfer methods, and we handle both.
