VHS-C, short for VHS Compact, was JVC's answer to the portability problem. Launched in 1982, it used the same half-inch tape as standard VHS but housed it in a cassette roughly the size of a pack of playing cards. This made it the go-to format for palm-sized camcorders throughout the late 1980s and 1990s. If your family owned a compact camcorder from that era, there is a good chance the tapes are VHS-C.

You can, but we would not recommend it. Consumer adapters are battery-powered, mechanically unreliable, and can misalign or jam the tape mid-playback. We have seen tapes damaged by adapters more often than by any other cause. Our professional decks bypass the adapter entirely and handle the tape far more safely.
The cost reflects the handling, inspection, and professional equipment time rather than the tape length. Each VHS-C cassette still needs a full shell inspection, ribbon check, time base corrected playback, and colour correction. The process per tape is the same regardless of duration.
Yes. Each tape requires the same inspection, setup, and equipment time regardless of how much footage is on it. A tape with five minutes of recording still needs a full shell check, head clean, and calibrated playback pass.
Yes. VHS-C uses the same magnetic tape formulation as full-size VHS, so it is subject to the same degradation risks. The shorter tape length actually means there is less margin for error, because even a small section of damaged ribbon represents a larger proportion of the total footage.
Leave it as-is and send the whole thing. We will extract the tape safely using the correct release mechanism. Forcing the adapter open or pulling the cassette out risks creasing or snapping the ribbon.
