A 7-inch reel is the largest standard size commonly found in home cine collections. It holds approximately 400 feet of film, giving you around 25 to 33 minutes of footage at standard Super 8 speeds. These reels were typically used by more serious amateur filmmakers, or created by splicing together multiple smaller reels into a single compilation, a greatest hits of family holidays, birthdays, and Christmases all wound onto one big spool.

7 Inch Reel to Digital: Your Questions
Lofts are unfortunately one of the worst environments for film storage, with extreme temperature swings, humidity, and limited airflow. Your film may have vinegar syndrome, colour fading, or brittleness as a result. We assess every reel before scanning and will let you know the condition. In most cases, we can still produce a usable transfer.
Yes. Our scanner handles all standard gauges on 7-inch spools, including 16mm. A 7-inch reel of 16mm film holds roughly 100 feet, which gives you about two to three minutes at 24fps. If you have longer 16mm reels on larger spools, contact us and we can discuss options.
A 7-inch reel holds roughly eight times more film than a 3-inch reel. The scanning, colour correction, and quality checking all take proportionally longer. The pricing reflects the amount of footage rather than the physical size of the spool.
Yes. If your Super 8 or 16mm film has a magnetic sound stripe along the edge, we capture the audio track alongside the video. The sound quality varies depending on the original recording equipment, but we extract whatever is there.
Yes. We return all original film after the transfer is complete. Your reels are packed securely and shipped back to you with the same care we use for incoming media.
Significantly. Projection-based transfer (sometimes called telecine) introduces flicker, hotspots, focus inconsistency, and keystoning. Frame-by-frame scanning captures each individual frame as a clean, sharp still image, then assembles them into smooth video. The difference in quality is dramatic.
