How we convert your Mini Cassette to digital

Mini cassettes (not to be confused with the smaller micro cassettes) were developed by Philips in 1967 specifically for office dictation equipment. Slightly larger than micro cassettes, they were the standard format for Philips and Grundig dictation systems used by secretaries, solicitors, doctors, and business professionals across the UK for decades. If you have mini cassettes, they most likely contain professional dictation, meeting recordings, or interview notes.

The format was designed for speech intelligibility rather than music quality. The tape runs at a single speed and the frequency response is optimised for the human voice range. While the audio is lo-fi by music standards, a well-recorded dictation on a properly functioning machine produces clear, understandable speech, and that is exactly what most people need from these tapes.

Mini cassettes present similar challenges to micro cassettes: thin tape that can stretch or snap, aged pressure pads that no longer make proper contact with the playback head, and years of accumulated pack tension from sitting unplayed in a drawer. We handle them on dedicated mini cassette machines with properly maintained transports, and we always relieve pack tension before playing to protect against breakage.

These recordings are often the only surviving copy of professional or personal voice content: a relative dictating memoirs, a solicitor's client notes, or irreplaceable interview recordings. We treat every tape with the care its content deserves.

Playback on dedicated Philips-compatible mini cassette machines
Pack tension relief before first play to protect fragile tape
Speech-optimised noise reduction that keeps voices clear and natural
Both standard and long-play speed mini cassettes supported
Output as WAV and MP3 files for archival and everyday listening
Careful handling of professional dictation and legal recordings

How to Identify Your Mini Cassette

Use these detailed characteristics to confirm you have the right format

1Size Comparison

Slightly larger than a micro cassette, approximately 6.4cm × 3.8cm × 1.2cm
Smaller than a standard audio cassette but larger than a micro cassette
Two spools arranged side by side, similar to a standard cassette layout
Usually has a rounded or tapered shape rather than a sharp rectangular edge

2Branding and Context

Most commonly associated with Philips and Grundig dictation systems
May be branded LFH (Philips model prefix) on the cassette or packaging
Recording times typically 15, 30, or 45 minutes per side
Often found in professional office settings, medical practices, or legal firms

3Distinguishing from Micro Cassettes

Mini cassettes are noticeably bigger than micro cassettes when placed side by side
If the cassette came from a desktop dictation station rather than a handheld recorder, it is likely a mini cassette
Mini cassettes often have a sliding write-protect tab; micro cassettes usually have a breakable tab

Mini Cassette to Digital: Your Questions

Mini cassettes are slightly larger than micro cassettes. If you place them side by side, the difference is obvious. Mini cassettes are typically associated with Philips and Grundig desktop dictation machines, while micro cassettes come from handheld pocket recorders and answering machines. If you are unsure, send them to us and we will identify the format.

We treat all recordings as private and confidential. Our transfer process is handled in-house by a small team, and we do not share, listen to, or retain any content beyond what is needed for quality checking. If you have specific confidentiality requirements, let us know and we can discuss them.

Yes. We treat all recordings as private and confidential regardless of content. Our transfer process is entirely in-house, and we do not share, store, or retain any audio beyond what is needed for quality checking.

No. Mini cassettes are a completely different size and mechanism from standard compact cassettes. They require dedicated mini cassette playback equipment, which is what we use for every transfer.

In most cases, yes. The tape may be fragile after decades in storage, which is why we relieve pack tension before playing and use gentle transport mechanisms. We have successfully transferred mini cassettes over 40 years old.
