Audio tapes degrade in ways that directly affect the sound you hear. Print-through is one of the most common issues: the magnetic signal gradually leaks through to adjacent layers of tape on the spool, creating a faint ghostly pre-echo that gets worse the longer the tape sits wound. Demagnetisation erodes the high-frequency content first, making recordings sound progressively muddier and more muffled with each passing year. The oxide coating sheds from the base film, pressure pads inside cassette shells lose their spring, and the tape itself can stretch, become brittle, or stick to itself. Playing a deteriorated tape on a poorly maintained machine can cause further permanent damage: stretched sections, creased tape, or broken ribbons. Professional transfer equipment handles aged tapes far more gently and extracts a cleaner signal, but even that cannot recover information that has already been lost to decades of storage. The sooner you transfer, the more you preserve.
