Use these detailed characteristics to confirm you have the right format
Not sure what format you have? .
In most cases, yes. Consumer DAT machines are less tolerant of aged tapes than professional decks. Our machines have better error correction, adjustable tracking, and regularly cleaned heads, which means they can often read tapes that a home machine refuses to play.
Yes. We transfer DAT tapes digitally via S/PDIF or AES/EBU, which means the audio data goes straight from the tape to the file without passing through any analogue stage. The original sample rate and bit depth are preserved exactly.
Absolutely. DAT was a standard mastering format in professional studios for years. We understand the importance of these recordings and transfer them at the original resolution with full error monitoring. If you need the files in a specific format for further production work, let us know.
Yes. Some DAT tapes switch between 44.1kHz and 48kHz partway through, particularly if the tape was used across multiple recording sessions. Our decks detect sample rate changes automatically and capture each section at its native rate.
If the recordings were made on decent equipment, the quality will likely be excellent. DAT captured CD-quality audio or better, and well-stored tapes from the 1990s typically play back with very few errors. Live concert recordings on DAT are among the most rewarding transfers we do.
