How We Convert Your U-matic to Digital

U-matic was the world's first successful videocassette format. Developed by Sony and launched in 1971, it used three-quarter-inch tape in a large, robust cassette and became the backbone of broadcast news, corporate video, and educational institutions for over two decades. If you have U-matic tapes, they almost certainly contain professionally produced content: news reports, training films, corporate presentations, or institutional recordings.

Your Questions Answered

U-matic to Digital: Your Questions

U-matic SP (Superior Performance) is an enhanced version of the standard format with improved signal-to-noise ratio and better colour reproduction. Both use the same three-quarter-inch tape, and our decks handle both variants. If your tapes are a mix of standard and SP, just send them all together.

Yes. We regularly process institutional and corporate archives with dozens or even hundreds of U-matic tapes. We can provide a detailed catalogue of tape conditions and contents as part of the transfer. Contact us before sending a large batch so we can arrange the logistics.

U-matic requires specialist broadcast-grade playback equipment that is extremely expensive to maintain and almost impossible to replace. The decks, parts, and expertise needed to transfer U-matic correctly are significantly more scarce than for consumer formats like VHS.

U-matic cassettes are sturdy but should be packed vertically (on their edge) with padding between each tape. Our reinforced media box can hold several U-matic cassettes safely. For large batches, contact us to arrange suitable packaging before you ship.

Yes. Our decks handle PAL, NTSC, and SECAM. If your U-matic tapes were recorded in different regions, we can transfer them all without any issues.
