Use these detailed characteristics to confirm you have the right format
Not sure what format you have? .
Yes. Our Revox and Studer machines accept spools up to 10.5 inches (26.5cm), which is the standard professional size. These large reels can hold over an hour of audio at 7.5 ips, and we transfer them at full resolution.
That is most likely sticky-shed syndrome, where the binder holding the magnetic oxide absorbs moisture and becomes gummy. If played in this condition, the tape squeals and sheds oxide. We test for this and, where necessary, bake the tapes at a controlled temperature to temporarily re-stabilise the binder before playback. It is a well-established archival technique.
We primarily handle quarter-inch (6.35mm) reel-to-reel, which covers the vast majority of consumer and semi-professional recordings. If you have half-inch or wider multitrack tapes from a professional studio, contact us to discuss your requirements.
Not at all. Identifying the correct speed and track layout is part of our standard process. We test each reel and set the playback parameters correctly before capturing. You do not need to know the technical details.
From a preservation standpoint, absolutely. Personal recordings of BBC broadcasts, radio dramas, or music sessions from that era can have genuine historical interest. The audio quality on well-stored reel-to-reel tape from the 1960s is often remarkably good.
