How We Convert Your APS to Digital

The Advanced Photo System (APS) was launched in 1996 as a joint effort by Kodak, Fuji, Nikon, Canon, and Minolta to modernise consumer photography. APS film came in a self-loading drop-in cartridge (no more threading film leaders) and offered three print formats from every frame: C (classic 6×4), H (high-definition 7×4), and P (panoramic 10×4). The idea was convenience, and for a few years it worked. Millions of APS cameras were sold in the UK.

What's Included

Careful extraction of film from sealed APS cartridges
High-resolution scanning at magnification appropriate for the smaller frame size
Infrared dust and scratch removal (Digital ICE) on every frame
All three APS formats supported: C (classic), H (high-definition), P (panoramic)
Magnetic data strip read where possible for correct aspect ratio reproduction
Film returned inside the original cartridge after scanning

How to Identify Your APS

Use these detailed characteristics to confirm you have the right format

1
The APS Cartridge

Small, self-contained plastic cartridge approximately 4cm × 3cm × 1.5cm
Film is completely enclosed. You cannot see the negatives without opening the cartridge
Has a numbered indicator (1-4) showing whether the film is unexposed, partially exposed, fully exposed, or processed
Will not fit in a 35mm camera or scanner without extraction

2
Common Brands and Cameras

Film brands: Kodak Advantix, Fujifilm Nexia, Agfa Futura
Camera brands: Canon ELPH/IXUS, Nikon Pronea, Minolta Vectis, Kodak Advantix
If you have a compact camera from the late 1990s with a drop-in film door, it is likely APS
Cartridges are often stored in small plastic cases or still inside the camera

3
How to Tell APS from 35mm

APS cartridges are smaller and rounder than 35mm film canisters
35mm film has a protruding film leader; APS cartridges are fully enclosed
If the film cartridge is smooth, round, and has no visible film strip, it is almost certainly APS

Your Questions Answered

APS to Digital: Your Questions

We do not develop unprocessed film ourselves, but we can recommend a specialist film lab that still processes APS. Once developed, we can then scan the negatives for you. Check the indicator on the cartridge: if it shows 1 or 2, the film is unexposed or partially exposed and needs developing first.

APS negatives are smaller than 35mm, which means they need higher magnification scanning to produce usable files. The cartridges also require careful manual opening and re-assembly. Both factors add time and specialist handling to the process.

Yes. We scan every frame on every cartridge and return the film inside the original cartridges. You can review the digital files and decide what to keep.

The APS frame is smaller than 35mm, roughly 60% of the area, so the scans will contain less detail than an equivalent 35mm negative. That said, our high-magnification scanning extracts every bit of detail the format can offer, and the results are more than good enough for sharing, printing, and preserving.

It means the film was shot but never developed. We cannot scan undeveloped film. You will need to have the film processed by a specialist lab first, then send the developed cartridge to us for scanning.
